Prepare for confession

An examination of conscience

A simple guide to help you look back honestly before confession, organized around the Ten Commandments. Take your time, and do not worry about getting it perfect.

How to use this guide

  1. Find a quiet place and ask the Holy Spirit to help you see your life clearly and honestly.
  2. Read the questions slowly. Skip those that do not apply to you.
  3. Note anything that stands out, especially serious sins and roughly how often.
  4. Finish with a prayer of sorrow, and trust in God's mercy.

Love of God (1st to 3rd Commandments)

  • Have I made time for God in prayer, or have I let other things come first?
  • Have I put my trust in money, success, horoscopes or superstition instead of God?
  • Have I used God's name carelessly or in anger?
  • Have I missed Mass on Sundays or holy days without a serious reason?
  • Have I received Communion while aware of serious sin?

Family and life (4th and 5th)

  • Have I been disrespectful or unkind to my parents or family?
  • Have I neglected my responsibilities to my spouse, children or aging parents?
  • Have I held on to anger, hatred or a refusal to forgive?
  • Have I harmed others or myself through violence, abuse, or the misuse of alcohol or drugs?
  • Have I been impatient, harsh or cruel in my words?

Purity (6th and 9th)

  • Have I been faithful in my thoughts and actions?
  • Have I looked at pornography or entertained impure thoughts on purpose?
  • Have I treated others as objects rather than as people?

Honesty and property (7th, 8th and 10th)

  • Have I stolen, cheated, or failed to pay what I owe?
  • Have I been dishonest at work or wasted time I was paid for?
  • Have I lied, gossiped or damaged someone's reputation?
  • Have I been jealous of what others have, or let wanting more rule my life?
  • Have I been generous to people in need?

When you have finished

This list is a starting point, not a complete catalog. If you are unsure whether something is a sin, you can simply ask the priest. Then read our step-by-step guide so you know what to expect, including the Act of Contrition.
